Easter in the early church

The early church commemorated the event of Jesus’ resurrection with a simple supper and prayer.

Later on his missionary journey, Paul continued to remind the early church members of the importance of the events of Jesus ‘resurrection and Jesus’ words at the Last Supper.

The earliest source to write about Paskah was Melito of Sardis who wrote the homily entitled Peri Pascha (About Easter).

Christians at that time trampled the path of the cross (Via Dolorosa) which was passed by the Lord Jesus. His death was commemorated as a sacrifice of salvation in the Jewish tradition (Hebrew: Zerah Syelamin).

Jewish Christians continued to celebrate the Jewish Passover, but they no longer sacrificed the Passover lamb because Christ was considered the true Easter sacrifice. This celebration begins with fasting until Friday at 3 pm (some continue until Easter morning). Differences arise around the date of Easter.

Jewish Christians and provincial churches of Asia celebrate on the same day as the Jewish Passover, which is the day after Nisan 14 (first month) according to their calendar – Jesus ‘death on 15 Nisan and Jesus’ resurrection on 17 Nisan – regardless of the day but non-Christians Jews living in the Roman Empire and also the churches in Rome and Alexandria celebrated on the first day, namely the days of Jesus’ resurrection, regardless of the date.

The second method was finally used more in the church, and followers of the first method slowly began to be displaced. Bishop Viktor of Rome at the end of the second century declared that celebrations according to the 14th of Nisan were heretics and ostracized all of his followers.

Some other methods of accounting include some bishops in Gaul who counted Easter according to certain dates according to the Roman calendar, namely March 25 commemorating the death of Jesus and March 27 commemorating Jesus’ death because from the 3rd century March 25 it was considered the date of the crucifixion.
