Barbie may be a doll made by Associate in Nursing yankee company, Mattel, and was introduced in March 1959.The doll maker, Ruth Handler, was impressed by a German doll named Bild Lilli. Ruth Handler watched her daughter, Barbara, play with a paper doll, and she saw that her child was playing with the doll-like communicating with adults. At that time, most dolls for children are in the form of babies. Realizing that this would be a chasm in marketing, Handler had the idea of making adult dolls and the idea was conveyed to her husband Elliot, co-founder of the toy company Mattel.

On his trip to Europe in 1956 along with his children, Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler passed a shop that sold a German doll named Bild Lilli. Finally, Handler bought the three dolls, one of which was given to his daughter and the other two dolls were given to Mattel.
Barbie’s first doll was introduced in March 1959.
Back in the United States, Handler redesigned the doll with the help of Jack Ryan and was given a new name, Barbie. Barbie dolls first appeared at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959.  This date is also designated as the birthday of the doll.

Mattel acquired the copyright of the Lilli doll in 1964 and the production of the Lilli doll was stopped. The first Barbie doll appeared in black and white swimsuits and the hair resembled a ponytail and was available in blonde or brown. The doll is known as the “teenage trend” with clothes designed by Mattel’s fashion designer, Charlotte Johnson. The first Barbie doll produced in Japan, around 350,000 dolls were sold in the first year of production.
Ruth Handler argues that Barbie must appear in the adult version, and according to market analysis shows some parents feel unhappy with the doll’s chest shape because they don’t have breasts. Barbie’s appearance continued to be updated, enough to be seen in 1971 when the Barbie doll already had a pretty eye look compared to the previous model.

Barbie not only focuses on the production of dolls and accessories but has produced books, clothing, cosmetics, and video games. Barbie has also appeared in animated series and as supporting characters in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.

Barbie has become a cultural icon and given its own respect. In 1974, part of Times Square in New York City has renamed Barbie Boulevard in a few weeks. In 1985, painter Andy Warhol made a painting about Barbie.
In 2013, in Taiwan, a Barbie-themed restaurant named “Barbie Café” was opened to the public.
